High Cube Container Moratorium to be extended.

The Department of Transport has confirmed that the existing moratorium on the implementation of regulation 224(b) to the National Road Transport Act in respect of High Cube containers is to be extended for a further 18 months to 30 June 2021.

Regulation 224(b) prohibits the movement of vehicles higher than 430cm on a public road. When carried on a standard road trailer High Cube containers exceed this limit and are thus illegal. The purpose of the moratorium is to allow further research to be conducted into the potential hazards created by such vehicles before a decision is taken to amend the regulation or not. It also means that traders may continue to import and export using high cube containers without fear of detention and/or penalties from the traffic authorities.
